Blueberry Bushes
Seasonal Information. Ideally, blueberry bushes should be set out as early in the spring as possible. If you receive your plants during the summer or autumn months, be sure to place them immediately. If you cannot set them within a few days of receiving the plants, keep them in a cool, moist place and ensure that the roots do not dry out. Typically, the plants are not resilient in climates where temperatures drop below -20 degrees.
Location. Full sunlight & well-drained soil are required. Partial shade will be tolerated, but the production of blossoms & fruit will decline. Blueberries require an acidic soil with a pH of 4.5 to 5.0. It is recommended that your soil be checked to ensure the proper pH. A spacing of at least 4-5 feet between the plants is recommended, although they can be spaced further if necessary.
Planting Instructions. When digging the hole for planting, remember that due to the plants shallow root system, width is more essential than depth. Be sure to dig deep enough that the plant can be placed in at the same depth it grew in its container, and wide enough that the roots can be spread out completely. Add wet peat moss to each planting hole and mix equally with the soil. Adjust the plant to proper height & angle, and fill hole back in with soil. Firm the soil, and water the plant sufficiently.
Watering. Blueberry bushes require at least 1-2 inches of water per week. Keep in mind that the plants are very sensitive to water fluctuations. Be sure to water plants regularly, keeping the soil moist but not saturated.
Fertilization. It is recommended that the blueberry bushes be fertilized twice during the first growing season, preferably in early March & mid-June. Do not over fertilize, as the roots of the blueberry bushes are very susceptible and can be injured by excessive quantities of fertilizer.
Weed Control. Weeds or lawn should not be permitted to grow too close. The roots of the blueberry bush grow very close to the soil and need to be protected. Mulching is recommended for this purpose. Insulate the roots with 4-6 inches of mulch, and replenish as needed.
Pests & Disease. The best defense is a healthy tree. Good soil, proper feeding and adequate watering are vital to its prosperity. There is a possibility of birds being attracted to your blueberry bush. The most efficient type of bird control is the use of netting.
Pruning. The bushes will need very little pruning during the first few years after planting. Mature bushes will need annual pruning to revitalize the bushes.
Pollination. The Rabbiteye variety requires cross pollination. It is recommended that at least three different varieties be planted for this purpose.
