Versatile because of their size, Cavendish bananas can be grown indoors, on patios or in the ground given the right climate conditions.
Location: Place your Cavendish Banana plant in a sunny location with southern or western exposure so that it can receive as much afternoon sunlight as possible. If growing indoors, place next to a large, bright window with the same exposure, turning the plant when necessary to avoid plant growth that tilts toward the light source. Outdoor planting should be done in the summer months to avoid the possibility of frost damage. In the summer, plants can be placed in containers on patios or directly in the soil. They don’t tolerate frost well so be sure to insulate the ground planted Cavendish Bananas or bring containerized plants inside as necessary. Optimal conditions for healthy growth are a constant temperature average of 75 to 85 degrees F.
1. Choose and clear the planting site. Select a site that’s large enough to support the mature size of your Cavendish Banana. Make sure there’s enough sunlight for the leaves and maintain a surrounding soil temperature of at least 68 degrees F. Clear the planting area of all weeds and any plant life immediately surrounding the designated planting location.
2. Dig the Hole and Remove any damaged roots. Prepare the hole to the depth and width necessary to accommodate the root system—typically 30 cm deep and 50 cm in diameter. Carefully cut any damaged roots with sharp scissors. Also remove any broken leaves. It only takes about five good leaves for a banana tree to thrive. Too many leaves can prevent sunlight from keeping the soil at the desired moisture level.
3. Place the Cavendish Banana plant in the hole. Be sure the plant is in an upright position before covering with soil. Gently fill and tamp the soil.
Watering: Water daily as needed. Ensure proper moisture but be careful not to overwater. Don’t water the following day if the soil is wet.
Fertilization: Only apply the recommended amount of fertilizer as over fertilization may burn the roots and damage the plant. For organic fertilizer, use compost, well composted manure or other organic fertilizers. The fact that bananas are heavy feeders means they require nutrient rich soil, particularly potassium. Spent banana leaves and cuttings can be used as mulch to help return potassium to the soil.
Pests: The main culprit for banana plants is the Banana Bunchy Top Virus which spreads infection throughout the plant quickly and usually with deadly results. The disease is spread by the Banana Aphid and can be prevented by applying a soapy garden mist. Misting leaves regularly will also prevent the infestation of spider mites.
