Ginkgo

ginkgoleafCongratulations on the purchase of your Ginkgo Biloba Tree.  This amazing tree is one of the oldest living species on earth, making it a tough tree that requires little maintenance while adding many years of natural beauty to your landscape.  Here is a useful guide to ensure your Ginkgo lives well into the next century.

Location:

Choose a location that takes the mature height and width of your Ginkgo Tree into consideration.  This incredible tree can soar to 100 feet tall and 50 feet wide.  Give it an area surrounded by well-draining, preferably sandy soil.  Make sure the location has ample sun as Ginkgos do not grow well in the shade.

Planting Instructions:

  1. Dig a hole twice as wide and a little deeper than the root ball.

  2. Break up the bottom of the hole and add a 2 inch layer of planting compost into the bottom of the hole.

  3. Soak the Ginkgo Tree in a bucket of water before planting.

  4. Once the roots are hydrated, place the tree in the hole.  The surface of the root ball should be about 1 inch below ground level.

  5. Replace the soil you removed from the bottom of the hole, filling in around the root ball.

  6. Water well.

  7. Add bark mulch to the planting area and keep it moist but not waterlogged through the first growing season.

Watering:

Water your Ginkgo tree regularly each week and more often as necessary during hot, dry periods.

Pruning:

Pruning early to develop one central leader is highly recommended to ensure healthy, strong development.

ginkgoFertilization:

There is no need to add fertilizer as Ginkgo Trees will thrive with the nutrients available in the soil.  If desired, you can fertilize with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in the spring.

Pests:

Ginkgo is pest free.  It’s even resistant to gypsy moth.

Tips:

  • Avoid planting near low hanging power lines or overhead obstructions.
  • Do not over water your Ginkgo Tree
